off the shoulder trend

off the shoulder trend

There are two things that I have loved even as a little girl: dressing up and wearing lipstick. When I was at the young age of 7, my dad would send me back into the house to clean my face when I would attempt wearing bold lipstick to church. Needless to say, when they unleashed me to wear makeup at age 10 {there was so much begging involved}, my world became so much brighter. Lol. This love for pretty things and flashy colors has been part of me for a long time.

Over the years of being that extreme girly girl, I noticed that stereotyping is a larger epidemic then we would care to admit, and it warps our view of people around us. For so long, I was hurt by the fact that I was stereotyped based on my girly flair or based on my family being in the ministry. I was put in this ditzy, materialistic, high maintenance, conceited box or this religious box because of my outer appearance, face full of makeup and Jesus talking and walking family!! These assumptions  made me question the very things that I’ve loved since I was a little girl. I totally agree with that saying that there is always more to a person {and a family} than what meets the eye. It is so important the we stop the gender profiling, racial profiling and all of the other profiling. It’s rampant amongst our children because we as adults are guilty of it too.

We recently were at a sporting event, and my youngest son who is only five years old spotted a man with a lot of tattoos. He proceeds to tell me after staring at him hard and long: “it’s okay that he has those, right, mom?? He’s not bad, right?!”. Of course, I proceeded to instruct him: “Tattoos do not  define if a person is good or bad. It’s not nice to judge people based on their outward appearance or style or if they look different then us.”.

“Just remember that sometimes, the way you think about a person isn’t the way that they actually are.”

Stereotyping: to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same.

There are so many common stereotypes that we all might be guilty of participating in. For example: “People who work out are body obsessed, Mexicans are all illegal, Middle eastern people are all terrorists, Only skinny, fit people are beautiful, People who take selfies have to have a mental disorder, Girls who wear makeup are trying to get attention, Men who wear sleeveless shirts, flat bill hats and have tattoos are surely a rapist or a murderer.”. Assuming prevents us from seeking and knowing the real truth.

“Before you assume, LEARN. Before you judge, UNDERSTAND. Before you hurt, FEEL. Before you say, THINK.”

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged…” Mt 7:1-2

So, yes, my girly-ness is full blown with this off the shoulder dress from VICI. Do you have a love for the OTS trend as much as I do??? I’m obsessed with every top and dress that I see. I can totally style this particular dress in various ways. And, yes, I think that I needed to add a belt to complete this outfit… There is always next time. Anywho, I found these Prada dupes for under $25. And, this darlin’ straw tote from Mimic Design is a perfect summer bag. I can’t stop rockin’ it.

Thanks so much for stopping by my little, dashing world. Hope that you have a lovely week.

This post couldn’t be any more perfect! We definitely as a society “judge” too soon, too often. I think we can all use a little reminder that there is more than meets the eye!!!

Love this! As people, we tend to label. You address this so beautifully in this post. If people only realized what they were saying and what their assumptions were doing to those around them, then maybe they would stop. Maybe not. But, I do believe if we start teaching our littles, then they will carry on the message. So I applaud you for helping your son understand this and not letting labels get to you. You are beautiful and so much more than just a label!

I’ve never considered an off the shoulder look but this dress is amazing! Do you think it’s one you can pull of with short hair? I always worry that my shoulder length will be awkward in these cuts.

I adore the off-shoulder look. I’m very pregnant this summer, and my toddler loves to…er…rearrange whatever I’m wearing, so I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet, but I’m hoping it’ll still be in next summer because I’m totally going to rock it all summer long next year whether it’s considered fashionable or not!

It’s so important not to judge a book by it’s cover. There’s always so much more to a person than there outward appearance. But I must say, I do LOVE your outfit! Too cute.

Beautiful perspective love. I absolutely agree with you… There is always so much more to a person than what meets the eye, & more often than not preconceived judgements make you miss out on so much in this world.

Such great thoughts about stereotypes, especially in light of what we’re going through as a society. As for the dress, the hem at the bottom is FABULOUS and it looks PERFECT on you…so there’s that!!! xo

And then there's yesterday — pedestrian on sidewalk walking towards me midblock. She looks up right at my face and then STEPS INTO THE STREET DIRECTLY INTO ME. Only when I brushed by her with a “whoa!” did she seem to take notice of the bike in the bike lane.

21fHas anyone else ever researched histamine intolerance? Green tea is a no-no for that. I have a really bad reaction ( joint pain and stiffness ) to green tea, but it seems like a lot of other “health foods” cause it too. It’s really frustrating because I want to lose weight and feel healthy, but every time I try to do the right thing, I seem to feel worse. The histamine diet has a lot of health foods listed that can make you feel bad, including lots of fruits, veggies, and fish.

f9207I do love the way you have presented this specific difficulty plus it does indeed provide us a lot of fodder for consideration. Nonetheless, through what precisely I have observed, I simply just hope when the remarks pile on that people stay on issue and in no way embark upon a soap box involving the news of the day. All the same, thank you for this fantastic point and while I can not agree with this in totality, I respect the point of view. b967
